KEVIN MAHOGANY: Old, New, Borrowed & The Blues
self-released, 2013
JAZZ VOCALS – Mix of live and studio tracks from the big man with the blues-soaked voice. The recording quality isn’t always great but the performances are solid, with high-powered scatting, Joe Williams-style blues shouting, and soft romance in the ballads. All tracks clean.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10
1. 6:27 – mid-uptempo groover with “jazz lives” lyrics and powerhouse scatting
2. 3:59 – standard ballad, relaxed and swinging at a steady pace
3. 5:15 – medium blues walk: guitar rides the beat, soulful vocal
4. 5:04 – just the blues: KM really wants to sing a duet with Tony Bennett
5. 2:01 – cute little bounce with just piano & bass
6. 4:58 – snappy bebop: a scatting showcase, lively guitar & piano breaks
7. 4:01 – sweet ballad and low vocal, bluesy sax, saloon piano
8. 6:19 – slow ballad, just vocal & piano: takes its time to blossom
9. 4:28 – classic blues walk, shoutin’ vocals & cool-toned sax, bass solo
10. 4:54 – strong gospel classic, just vocal & piano
