ROBERT HURST: BoB: A Palindrome
Bebob, 2013
POSTBOP – Excellent, deep-running music from a top bassist leading an all-star septet. These tunes all have a balance of dark atmosphere and forceful rhythm, with the kind of unforced cohesion that only the best bands can really pull off. Sometimes heavy, often funky, all great.
Robert Hurst : bass
Marcus Belgrave : trumpet, flugelhorn
Branford Marsalis : saxophones
Bennie Maupin : flute, bass clarinet, saxophones
Robert Glasper : piano, Rhodes
Jeff "Tain" Watts : drums
Adam Rudolph : percussion
All excellent! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9
Tracks 5-7 are a suite but can be played separately.
1. 7:20 – brisk, dusky waltz with flute: solos (including bowed bass) really sing
2. 4:16 – dark, sneaky stroll: very cool electric piano, trumpet & soprano sax
3. 8:25 – perky midtempo glide with a latin touch; sax really turns up the heat
4. 6:37 – rolling drums set up a cool, bluesy drag: sax and piano solos unfurl
5. 1:38 – shrouded in mist: dark, creaky drone and atmospheric percussion
6. 7:15 – slow, exotic elegy with brooding melody, African rhythm, soft flute
7. 12:56 – deep solo bass, striding post-bop blues, a fiery sax duet pulls it forward most of the way, then it ends in chaos
8. 7:51 – relaxed and very soulful with tinkly keyboard and slinky latin rhythm
9. 5:55 – uptempo, angular modern-bop, quick-walking bass & peppy drums
10. 6:28 – streetwise jamming, everybody’s conversing
