An early biographer of Bach claims that the Goldberg Variations (published 1741) were written for the Russian ambassador to the electoral court of Saxony, when he suffered from debilitating bouts of insomnia. The harpsichordist J. G. Goldberg, who had studied with Bach, was to play the Variations for the count. The bass harmonic progression is repeated throughout the 30 variations as the theme undergoes elaborate variation. The genres of the variations are: Baroque dances (#s 4,7,19); a fughetta (#10); a French overture (#16); ornamented arias (#s13, 25); sprightly “arabesques” (#s 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29). Variations divisible by 3 (#s 3, 6, 9 etc.) are canons (a melody followed after a given duration by an imitation in a different voice) at increasing intervals from the unison to a 9th. Var 30 is a silly folk tune to escape the serious mood of the whole. The final aria is a repeat of the opening aria.
