The 12 songs that Dvorak arranged in 1887 for string quartet were originally composed in the 1860s as love songs (never published) inspired by a 16-year-old pupil; he later married her sister. The cycle embodies Dvorak’s lyricism. Nos. 6 and 11 are gay, No. 8 pensive, No. 10 calmly happy, No 12 resolute and assertive. The other songs are mildly melancholic. The beautiful, creative writing for string quartet illustrates Dvorak’s mastery of this medium. Dvorak’s G Major Quartet was composed in 1895 after his sojourn in the U.S. The 1st mvmt is an energetic expression of thanksgiving; the 2nd a set of variations on a theme reminiscent of American spirituals; the 3rd a scherzo using a Czech spring dance rhythm, opening and closing with a minor key agitation surrounding an untroubled major key middle section; the finale alternates tuneful, slow melancholy with fiery allegro segments.
