Artist: Sessions
Album: Metacognition
Genre: Djent, Melodic Hardcore, Groove, Death Metal
RIYL: Reflections, Meshuggah, Volumes, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Necrophagist, The Faceless
A debut EP from an underrated five-piece djent band based on Fairfax, Virginia. The album shows an excellent control of the elements that consist a djent song- heavy/sticky guitar riffs sliced with ambient/hazy/post-rockish interludes. The album lacks surging shredding, but it doesn’t matter. As a whole, it’s already an outstanding piece of album that has a nice flow from track to track that makes the album highly enjoyable.
FCC 2, 4
***1. IV (2.11)- Eerie effects fade in; heavy riffs explodes with dark rhythmic soundscapes as background; nice groove followed up; no vox for this track; good to play this with the second track; ambient effects fade out.
(FCC)**2. Gifts Ungiven (4.26)- Monstrous vocals fit with the sticky guitar tones; nice post-rockish guitar interlude as background around 1:50; good control of tempo; bleak? effects around 3:15; Could have a better ending though rather than fades out
*****3. Haunted Sleep (4.32)- Sounds of hell; good guitar riffs around 1:00; a BRILLIANT change to post-rock interlude around 1:20 and then later explodes to laddering melodic death riffs with death growls, HOLY FUCK, why am i still alive?, great rhythmic chopping guitar riffs around 3:25
(FCC)****4. Nerve Endings (4.49)- Start off with forceful death growls; post-rock interlude around 2:12 of ambient soundscapes with machine gun heavy riffs and then explodes; fades out with haunted effects
****5. Aversion (4.34)- Layered vocals with sticky guitar on and off; menacing riffs around 1:33; guitar riffs builds on around 1:55 and 3:30, especially those around 3:30 till the end, which give dark and somber feelings
