DAVE DOUGLAS QUINTET: Time Travel
Greenleaf, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – Recorded during the same sessions as Douglas’ Be Still album (which featured a vocalist and a program of hymns), these original tunes put the trumpeter’s new ensemble through its paces in a pure jazz context. And what a great group! Jon Irabagon’s oddball sax and Matt Mitchell’s mysterious piano fit Douglas’ slightly skewed concepts really well, while bassist Linda Oh and drummer Rudy Royston make a great rhythm tandem, pulling slightly off the axis.
Try any track! Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 6, 7
1. 8:26 – swinging three-bar riff, horns jump into dialogue, stealthy solos
2. 6:21 – gooey, pulled-taffy shuffle: sour trumpet, rolling sax, squirrelly piano
3. 8:22 – brooding, suspended feel: tries to rise up above circular pattern
4. 5:50 – odd, quick-paced boppin’ with a country feel; happy/chugging solos
5. 9:18 – midtempo: sneaks through a lullaby and diverse, lively solos
6. 5:37 – bustling uptempo drive: horns slice thru the groove, quiet bass solo
7. 10:11 – relaxed pulse and a graceful arc, with wonderful horn solos & piano
