RYAN KEBERLE + CATHARSIS: Music Is Emotion
Alternate Side, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – Trombonist Keberle presents an unusual brass & rhythm quartet on this disc, for a very clean, stripped-down sound. He has great rapport with trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, and the original tunes have comfortable, appealing melodies, but the group also sounds good on tunes by Strayhorn, Lennon/McCartney, Sufjan Stevens and others.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10
1. 6:48 – friendly midtempo bounce: trombone solo lays back, trumpet hops
2. 9:00 – light, shifting groove: really nice horn dialogue and lively drum patter
3. 10:00 – droning bass intro: moves from an elegy to an optimistic glide
4. 5:31 – dark sound shows indie-rock influence, horns stay close together
5. 6:53 – Beatles: starts bittersweet, blossoms, falls back, then really surges
6. 6:07 – slow: very cool Ellingtonian blues-drag with moaning sax
7. 9:35 – patterns grow & evolve, relaxed solos from bass, trombone, trumpet
8. 7:03 – Nedelle Torrisi tune: slow march slides into midtempo walk/groove
9. 6:58 – Sufjan Stevens tune: relaxed, steady pace & a folksy feel from bass
10. 6:59 – straight up bop theme w/sax; grooving solos & 3-way horn chatter
