ERI YAMAMOTO TRIO: Firefly
AUM Fidelity, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – Anyone who’s checked out pianist Eri Yamamoto’s other CDs in the KZSU library knows what to expect here: gorgeously lyrical, effortlessly flowing pieces that rise into the sky. Some are melancholy, others have a sweetly honest optimism; all show perfect interplay amongst her long-running trio. What this live set adds to the mix is more emphasis on rhythm and spontaneity. Great stuff as usual!
All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8
1. 7:23 – a soft, warm stroll: piano floats above a gentle pulse, grows stronger
2. 5:19 – open interplay: trio dances round each other as energy slowly rises
3. 6:25 – lopsided jazz walk opens up for bass & piano solos, rolls into the end
4. 9:02 – gentle folksong into nostalgic flow with brisk rhythm, sense of wonder
5. 7:08 – turbulent trio interplay, gets much softer in the middle for bass solo
6. 8:53 – soft, introspective midtempo: rich, evocative piano & quiet bass solo
7. 8:16 – upbeat, lopsided rhythm: playful exploration from piano & drums
8. 8:21 – really nice walking-tempo groove: gets rather loose in the middle
