NANCY HARMS: Dreams in Apartments
Gazelle Records, 2013
JAZZ VOCALS – Nancy Harms has a beautiful, sophisticated voice that really glows on ballads and gentle standards, so it’s great that those make up the bulk of this CD (the two uptempo numbers lack that vocal magic). About half the tracks are originals, and they fit in quite well too with some insightful lyrics.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9
1. 3:38 – uptempo original, rushes by in a breathless driving spiral
2. 4:23 – delicate, hushed, smoky ballad; just voice and piano
3. 4:51 – midtempo standard, vocal rests gracefully atop a lovely trio
4. 4:28 – relaxed original, uplifting lyrics, simple sound with trombone break
5. 4:31 – hushed standard: haunting vocal goes high, soft guitar
6. 4:12 – vocal version of Erik Satie tone poem: fragile and sparkling
7. 5:25 – slow, otherworldly original: piano/guitar merge under stretched vocal
8. 3:44 – dramatic original, slashing rhythm, guitar pulls it upward
9. 5:50 – warm standard: aching whispery vocal, sweet guitar/piano interplay
10. 3:33 – gentle swing, curves sweetly, nice piano solo
