MARC CARY FOCUS TRIO: Four Directions
Motéma, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – This excellent date by pianist Marc Cary blends forceful acoustic trio work with unique fusion tracks that merge Indian rhythms and DC-area go-go funk. Cary jumps from piano to a range of electric keyboards, and Bay Area drummer Sameer Gupta is a perfect counterpart – his swift, agile rhythms really make this disc go.
Try any track… Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9
1. 8:48 – synths & tabla, settles into a steady jamming beat and just glides…
2. 5:27 – very unusual waltz in memory of Betty Carter, flies high and low
3. 7:05 – lopsided jabbing riff: great drums/bass support ecstatic piano flight
4. 6:51 – slow drone with fuzzy keyboards, picks up energy, soulful & deep
5. 5:40 – very odd meter keeps this streetwise strut on its toes
6. 5:54 – a ticking time bomb… upbeat but with rising tension & wildness
7. 7:15 – driving postbop theme; piano solo is all spirals & curls
8. 5:15 – updated Tony Williams & Lifetime: speedy light rhythm, great bass
9. 4:48 – lightly stomping groove, electro-acoustic riffing on top, a cool ride
10. 6:02 – drone ‘n’ drive: piano really digs in but tone stays very, very even
