EP from the up and coming Australian group. Composed of two visual artists (despite the kind of dumb album artwork) turned musicians, Ginger and the Ghost blends freak folk and indie pop into an addictive and unique combination. The biggest standout here is the lead singer’s voice, which is idiosyncratic in the best possible way. There’s a childishness to the vocals that fit perfectly with the imaginative wonder felt these tracks. Starts with three original songs and then three remixes by other artists of track 1.
Favorites: 1, 2, 3, 4. Play any and all, just be aware that the remixes are much more electronic while the originals are basically all acoustic. No FCCs.
Similar artists/releases: Lykke Li, Santigold, PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Knife, Bat for Lashes, CocoRosie
1. (4:26) *** Starts off with mellow acoustic guitar work, female vocals and subtle orchestral flourishes. Gains more intensity and momentum at 1:30 with percussion and more aggressive guitar strums.
2. (3:36) **** Faster tempo than track 1, opening with some really interesting percussion. Great vocal dynamics and super catchy while staying singularly eccentric.
3. (3:15) *** Yearning vocals with nicely layered acoustic guitar noises, builds into a beautiful anthemic march. All the songs on this album make me feel like I’m playing in the forest or something. Ends with a softer, eerie, vibe.
4. REMIX (3:03) ** Beautiful plucked notes like the original song before breaking into a kind of hip-hop and then clubby beat. Cool manipulated vox. Stays pretty true to the original but with a lot more velocity and intensity
5. REMIX (7:17) * Dance-y remix that sounds a little like it could have come off of Caribou’s “Swim” or from his other Daphni project. Manipulated vocals here as well and stays relatively engaging across its longer run time.
6. REMIX (5:20) * Interesting remix that sounds like it’s predominantly composed of organic instruments. Cinematic with some awesome drums. Almost sounds like a beat from off the album “Hidden” by These New Puritans
