KNEEBODY: The Line
Concord, 2013
MODERN JAZZ-ROCK – This inventive quintet really stays on its toes, rarely settling into any groove or mood for more than a minute or two. They hop from indie-rock style jamming to edgy beats to complex interplay, all within a grimy, greasy, but very fresh sound.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11
1. 4:42 – gritty midtempo chugger: dirty keyboard, hard drums, relaxed horns
2. 5:08 – odd, percolating march: horn counterpoint, guitar moan in middle
3. 6:24 – intersecting straight lines switch to locomotive fusion groove
4. 5:29 – slow trudge, ensemble stays close together; open, moody middle
5. 4:51 – uptempo, tight spirals: lively trumpet & sax breaks, flaring keyboard
6. 6:23 – heavy, dragging rock sound; guitar-like keys get trippy in the middle
7. 1:26 – atmospheric, improvised interlude… sets up #8
8. 3:20 – slow trudge, spare sound, climbs a very long hill
9. 5:25 – tense intro, quick beat evolves into a churning groove, buzzing sax
10. 4:20 – moody midtempo, a stripped down sound, opens up and contracts
11. 5:29 – slow horn flow vs jittery beat: gradually blossoms, gets spacey
12. 4:34 – thick instrumental rock, pulls itself up briefly, then collapses
