TIM BERNE’S SNAKEOIL: Shadow Man
ECM, 2013
AVANT-GARDE – Second release by this powerful new quartet led by “downtown” alto sax legend Berne. He’s joined by clarinet, piano, and drums (drummer Ches Smith doubles on vibes). Some tracks are wide open and calm (1,3), others frenetic and harsh, with frequent swings between weird chugging grooves and softer, melodic experimentation. They stretch out in tracks 4-6, which is where most of the action is.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6
1. 6:43 – fragile piano & squeaky drums at first, builds to a shimmering elegy
2. 8:02 – aggressively jittery bounce: drifts to the edge of chaos with fiery sax
3. 4:09 – wide open piano/sax duet, serene in a big echoing space
4. 22:58 – busy percolation breaks down to quiet floating, volcanic stomping, geometric interplay, chamber-music spirals, more stomping noise
5. 18:56 – solo piano ties itself in knots, quartet picks it up; open space, chugging groove, cymbal & sticks drum solo, clarinet soliloquy
6. 16:17 – insistent rhythmic start, slides into strange melodic shapes sans drums, rhythmic theme recurs in middle and powers second half
