DOUG WEBB: Another Scene
Posi-Tone, 2013
HARDBOP/POSTBOP – Tenor sax date with a solid quartet. A mixed bag, but really finds itself in the looser, less constrained tracks like 8 & 10. Half the cuts are originals, and most are relatively short, saying their piece without wearing themselves out.
Side note: respected Bassist Dwayne Burno just passed away at age 43 from a kidney ailment (in Dec 2013).
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10
1. 4:05 – upbeat swinger, a workmanlike groove, crisp sax & piano solos
2. 7:01 – bluesy dirge intro, then quick/snappy drive: sax pushes it, hot drums
3. 4:29 – modern-bop: brisk tempo, sax plays it cool, then bright; quartet rolls
4. 5:52 – warm, gentle ballad: soft sax, delicate piano, livelier later on
5. 4:59 – lively revision of “Giant Steps” has strong sax moments, solid rhythm
6. 5:53 – upbeat, breezy take on a Brazilian classic
7. 5:42 – relaxed pace, spiritual postbop feel: piano looks up, sax reaches out
8. 3:48 – fast bop burner: drums are all over this one, sax is quick & agile
9. 5:17 – standard ballad: elegant cabaret piano & laid-back sax
10. 6:16 – nice rubato intro, free sax blowing is some of the best on the disc
11. 4:45 – happy stroll: sax gets lively, some quick breaks for bass & drums
12. 3:49 – relaxed and optimistic, just sax & piano
