ARTIST: Karl Denson's Tiny Universe ALBUM: New Ammo
LABEL: Stoopid Records REVIEWED: 2014-2-19 by Young Mick
Karl Denson is arguably top-five sax players of all time (see tracks 6, 8)... played w/ Lenny Kravitz, Greyboy Allstars, Slightly Stoopid (see label)... KDTU is an experienced band with a powerful funk drive. This album is very loud - some metal influences, distorted guitar, etc. (cover appropriately reads, "soul explosion") Instrumental except tracks 3, 6, 7. NO FCC's.
**1. (3:20) Slow, explosive start, almost metally, jammy.
****2. (2:31) Medium speed. Raggae-infused. Still distorted guitar.
*****3. (4:58) Pretty great and unexpected cover! Vocals are actually well done.
***4. (7:07) Upbeat. Straight power-funky. Copious solo-ing.
**5. (5:28) Upbeat. Pretty jazzy. Repetitive, driving, grimy bass line.
*****6. (6:12) Funk/rock/blues. Good vocals. Dynamic. GREAT SOLO-ING.
****7. (6:43) Ever heard 7 NATION ARMY w/ bad-ass jazz flute in lieu of vocals? Yup.
****8. (2:49) Medium speed. Just a very solid funk song. GREAT SOLOS.
**9. (3:15) Fast. Almost ska. Instr. other than a couple quick phrases.
***10. (4:01) Medium speed. Very jazzy, flute again.
**11. (7:28) Fast. Very jammy. Fairly dynamic.
***12. (3:24) Medium/slow speed. Funky. Grimey. A couple words.
*****13. (10:32) First half is very different (not loud). Chill. Jazzy. Dynamic. Gets loud. FAKE END @ 8:41 - play through, though.
