MO’FONE: ‘Fonology
Evander, 2014
FUNKY POSTBOP – More good times from this barebones Bay Area trio (two saxes + drums, plus some special guests this time around), a brass band in miniature that pulls in a solid dose of New Orleans parade groove but also shows plenty of modern-jazz chops and a forward-thinking attitude. Stomp, shake, shimmy, and strut along. Great stuff.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
1. 4:14 – hard uptempo: bustling, funky drive with a slinky undercurrent
2. 4:31 – midtempo snake-hips dance, soulful jamming in the middle
3. 4:03 – upbeat stomp opens up to a fat stroll, gets loose in the solos
4. 6:42 – catchy rolling groove with sousaphone, trombone, fantastic beat
5. 5:46 – loping, slightly off-center funky strut, sax solos reach out
6. 4:56 – excellent didgeridoo & hand drums in a mysterioso global fantasy
7. 7:50 – dragging funk: alto sax fights a lazy lope, nice drum break
8. 5:18 – upbeat, angular: stripped-down feel, optimistic saxes, speeds up
9. 5:09 – melancholy sax duet intro; gets brisk & snaky once drums come in
10. 2:53 – funeral march: solemn saxes & drum rolls, some lovely harmony
11. 4:11 – drums lead the way in this happy-go-lucky ditty, a nice closer
