BRUCE BARTH: Daybreak
Savant, 2014
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Pleasing set from pianist Barth and crew runs straight down the middle, but becomes noteworthy when trumpeter Terell Stafford and vibraphonist Steve Nelson enter the scene. Those guys really push Barth and the rhythm section on upbeat numbers, or round out the mood on ballads, making for a lively, entertaining disc.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10
1. 6:32 – happy trio stroll on a classic bossa nova melody, solos bash away
2. 6:22 – relaxed ‘n’ bluesy: trumpet solo wails, vibes & piano mesh briefly
3. 8:28 – uptempo, breezy drive: hits its stride in the roller-coaster solos
4. 5:04 – soft, mysterious ballad: vibe/piano/muted trumpet conversation
5. 4:48 – relaxed & soulful with a touch of gospel: a warm, optimistic sound
6. 6:52 – easygoing brazilian groove, calm and steady
7. 6:37 – upbeat trio rolls in 3/4 time… piano solo digs in a bit, fat bass
8. 6:25 – gentle vibraphone/piano duet: quiet, relaxed, open, and casual
9. 5:25 – swinging standard quartet… vibes out front first, then piano
10. 5:13 – piano/trumpet duet: they weave through each other nicely
