REGINA CARTER: Southern Comfort
Masterworks, 2014
FOLK-JAZZ – Violin star Carter digs into songs her coal-miner grandfather might have heard growing up in Alabama, as well as other roots sounds from folk to Cajun to a sort of world-music vibe. It’s beautifully performed with spirit and improvisational verve, and it all has a vibrant presence (no musty museum pieces here). Wonderful!
All tracks good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11
1. 5:01 – spinning rustic reel, dramatic accents: has a great world-music feel
2. 2:11 – cool, snappy funk: groaning work-song vocal slips in & out; too short!
3. 4:37 – lonesome country ballad: violin & steel guitar have a dreamy sound
4. 7:22 – uptempo: violin & accordion chase intro, then bright, warm, nostalgic
5. 4:39 – easygoing good-time blues stomp, violin is deliciously expressive
6. 7:12 – soft spiritual: violin weeps gently; 2nd half is more contemporary
7. 3:52 – Hank Williams classic gets funky with a catchy beat & happy solos
8. 4:14 – oooh… a gentle, haunting, drifting tune; oblique guitar solo
9. 5:15 – familiar folk/blues standard sounds like a road song, picks up energy
10. 3:33 – handclaps/rock guitar; cool violin/gtr tradeoffs, gospel refrain at end
11. 8:21 – swirling intro, then upbeat, rolling global folksong; solos fly away
