No FCCs. Elio Villafranca is an jazz pianist and composer who melds the traditions and rhythms of the Caribbean with essence of modern jazz. Born in Cuba, Elio arrived in the United States in 1996 and began to absorb the history of jazz and the music of early jazz icons like Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and Jelly Roll Morton. This album, his seventh, is mature and assured. The music is driving and energetic. The album feels like the front row of a great jazz club with accompanying applause. My favs: 3, 4, 6, 7, 9
1 Introduction 0:18 - a spoken introduction of the band
2 Sunday Stomp at Congo Square 4:54 - complex and multi-layered with dizzying spirals and a strong beat; false ending
*3 Last Train to Paris 8:26 - Starts quietly and slowly with the meditation of a solo sax, picking up orchestration along the way, but stays slow. Bits and pieces float together and apart.
**4 Caribbean Tinge 5:30 - Right off the bat, fast and furious, great congos, great piano solos
5 Flower by the Dry River 12:33 - Meandering and doleful; at about 2:20 almost complete silence, then drums building; speeds up about halfway through and begins to build some energy, but then seems to go off kilter; feels too long
*6 Cofradias 9:41 - Pulsing, energetic start with horns akimbo, good solos by drums and horns; lively and fun; mellows out toward the end
**7 Mambo Vivo 8:30 - Great syncopated start; makes you want to dance; good melodic line with tangents and quirks
8 Two to Tango 7:05 - Slow ba-bump of a song; moody and rich
*9 The Source in Between 10:01 - Tentative start like a piano fingering exercise; improvisational; building to a flamenco-like effect then disintegrating and re-integrating; starts really swinging about 2 minutes in
