Folk/country. This album is filled with wonderful, rich, golden textures. Nothing about this album is hurried. Listening to it is like ambling through a country meadow in Tennessee on a crisp autumn day. The vocals are often submerged beneath rich harmonies, guitars, drums. This album put me in mind of what Bon Iver might have been like, if Justin Vernon had grown up in the South. (Israel Nash is from Missouri.) Relaxing music with intricate, mesmerizing textures.
No FCCs. Recommended: 6, 5, 4, 9
1) “Woman at the Well” (4:35): One of the simplest, warmest songs on the album.
2) “Through the Door” (4:22): Fake ending at 2:17.
3) “Just Like Water” (5:01): Harmonica. The tone is subdued, maybe a bit resigned. “Just like water rolling off my back.” Long, slow finish.
4) “Who In Time” (4:17): Brilliant guitar intro, and some nice vocal harmonies.
5) “Myer Canyon” (5:39): Another superb extended intro. A couple fake endings.
6) “Rain Plans” (7:19): Sprawling, rich, beautiful. Intricate enough to get your full attention, but warm enough to be easy listening.
7) “Iron of the Mountain” (4:23): More nice vocal harmonies. Powerful ending.
8) “Mansions” (5:02): “You built your mansions on the rock / Just to find them sinking in the sand.” A little more distress in this song.
9) “Rexanimarium” (5:00): Superb last minute of rolling guitar.
