Jazz and Carnatic, South Indian classical music come together in this album aptly titled "Jazz Carnatica," by New York-based jazz trio led by Indian-American Arun Krishnamurthy. Arun plays the violin & Perry Wortman is on bass & Sameer Gupta on drums. Both, Arun and Sameet trained in Western & Indian classical music.
The album consists of original compositions by Arun along with famous compositions from 17th to 21st c. Arun has re-imagined the older compositions & infused it with jazz elements.
All tracks work. Play any one.
***1. Beautiful & melodic Carnatic composition. Composed by Swati Tirunal (1813-1846)
**2. Starts off on a typical Carnatic note & mid-way you hear the jazz influence.Composed by Muthuswami Dikishitar (1175-1835) , one of the trinity's of Carnatic music.
**3. Starts off on an ominous note (bass) & lightens up. Marc Cary's piano adds that 4th Dimension & the jazz flavor.
***4 Delightful & charming fusion of Carnatic & Jazz sounds. Aptly titled as Simple Joys. Composed by Muthiah Bhagvathar (1877-1945).
***5. The drone- typical of Indian classical music gives the musician an opportunity to display their versatility.
***6. Beautiful & pleasant instrumental track. Melodic. Composed by Narayana Teertha (1650-1745).
***7. Arun's virtuosity in violin shines, A wee bit sad. Around 2.45 the track's tempo changes & the sadness fades. No wonder it's titled "Delusions."
***8 Love the starting rhythm that morphs into a beautiful, lyrical piece.
9. "Revatii" has a certain Carnatic zing that Arun's violin provides. Has a nice beat & tempo that underscores the Carnatic & Jazz elements of the trio. Composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman (1930-2013).
