The Black Lips’ latest (first since 2011) offers more of their upbeat garagey sound, this time with more of a country twang. RIYL: King Khan & BBQ Show, Spider Bags, other garagey folk. I’d recommend some plays; it’s another fun record from everybody’s favorite Atlanta band.
No actual FCCs, but some near calls on 2, 4.
1. (2:46) *** Country-rock. Fat guitar sound. Think Country Joe + the Fish
2. (2:10) ****** mild FCC - piss -> Frat-party; thin-sounding chanter; the chorus (minor key harmony) is sweetly reminiscent of the early Beatles.
3. (2:19) ***** Drummy low-key, and sunny... with twang.
4. (2:59) **** mild FCC -> dick. Ominous air, with Silver Apples-esque oscillo-sound. Libidinous mewling yawls...
5. (2:38) **** Bright, strummy! Very King Khan and BBQ Show sound… SUDDEN END on drumbeat.
6. (2:30) * Annoying: chanting; strummy.
7. (3:37) ** Quiet intro; 70s-proto-arena-rock... annoying. All about the “Wild Boys…”
8. (3:36) *** Another kid-themed song, memories of the Pledge to Allegiance. Kinda sweet + sombre.
9. (2:31) **** Pretty nutsy hypno-- cyclic swirling down into some infinite well.
10. (3:08) ***** Sweet, there’s some Black Lips style whistlin'! Sweet and childish; more Sonny + the Sunsets sounding.
11. (2:29) ** Stomper... bluesy doomy chant.
12. (3:16) ***** Sighing/moaning... funny rhymes, super-snotty -- sweet lifting air at end --
