INDIE FOLK SINGER/SONGWRITER
Pieta Brown’s sixth full-length album features 13 original songs written by Brown (Amos Lee co-wrote and sings on #4), plus one (#6) by Mark Knopfler. Brown sings and plays guitar, resonator guitar, banjo, and piano. Accompaniment includes guitars, pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, and occasional strings. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) sings on tracks 2 & 3.
No FCC issues.
Mid-slow. Pretty vocal and stylish accompaniment, but not much to it. (3:07)
* Mid-slow. Lovely country ballad. More depth to the lyrics. (2:49)
* Mid-fast. Clever and catchy. Nice guitar, banjo, vocal harmonies. (3:27)
** Mid-tempo. Simple love-song duet with Amos Brown. The sappy strings and pretty background vocals only add to the sweetness. (3:01)
** Mid-slow. Headed-down-the-road folk song. Nicely sung. Pretty banjo. (4:20)
Slow. Spare & somber cover of a Mark Knopfler song. (3:22)
Mid-tempo. Somewhat melancholy. Accompanied by banjo & fiddle. (3:48)
Mid-slow. New-Age-ish instrumental (piano, steel guitar, strings). (2:56)
* Slow. Pretty singing; intriguing, obscure lyrics; lovely strings & guitar picking. (3:27)
Mid-tempo. Lots of story-telling imagery. I wish the singing were clearer. (3:43)
** Mid-tempo. Very traditional & folkie singing (think Gillian Welsh). Driven along sternly by guitar, banjo, drums. Vaguely anti-war. (3:54)
Slow, waltz time. Post-breakup broken-hearted wishes and wonderings. (3:32)
** Slow country ballad. Good singing. Guitars, steel, mandolin, a bit of strings. (3:29)
* Slow. Sounds like a traditional folk song. Starts very spare, gradually builds. (4:36)
