Generationals

The release of album no. 4 (this one) made it pretty clear that the Generationals have successfully honed their sound and created their own distinctive musical fingerprint: these guys are in the business of producing back-to-back bouncy, shimmery, catchy pop with a classic, nostalgic feel. It’ll be fun to get this album some kind of airplay over the winter, since Alix really feels like the perfect background music for some sunny summer days.

No FCCs
**1. (3:24) Track is structured around some very catchy xylophone (?) (do-doo-do-doo-do-do-do-doo). Upbeat and happy; will leave you will be humming along for a while after.
***2. (3:25) Extremely straightforward composition: keys + strong percussion + slightly reverbed, layered vocals = the obvious single from the bunch. Deceptively simple, but one of the album’s best.
*3. (3:04) More reverb on the vocals and classic, groovy guitar work. You can definitely hear some beach-y vibes/influence here.
4. (3:34) Slower track. Lo-fi vibes—everything’s really fuzzy here. A bit sleepy, repetitive.
***5. (3:30) Fun opening/underlying guitar plucking; playful synth enters to create an 80s space-age kind of edge to the track. Two vocalists have fun harmonizing and layering each other—one of the best on the album.
6. (3:33) Darker, bass-heavy, robotic voices, sounds subtly video-game-y.
*7. (3:39) Very 80s, heavy on bass and drawn out vocals. Excellent synth-y build-up in the latter half.
8. (3:18) Low, heavy guitar and dramatic “bam-dun-bam” percussion. Chorus breaks up the moodiness by introducing some toe-tapping anthem-y power synth.
9. (3:00) Light, starry guitar strumming floats around, distant thundering percussion cuts in every once in a while. Sleepy vox.
***10. (3:53) That xylophone makes an appearance again, along with beeping/blooping synth straight off a classic video game and some booming trumpet. Nice underlying bongo (?) beat. Echoey vocals. Builds up in an anthem-y style, explodes in a way that I can only describe as “shimmery”.
