Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) said he wrote music “as an apple tree produces apples.” The magnificent Symphony No. 3 in C minor, “Organ” is then a Golden Delicious, very full-flavored, dramatic and satisfying. It is “regarded as one of the high points of 19th-cent. French symphonic music. This tuneful piece is marked by joie de vivre, orchestral grandeur and innovation (including piano 4 hands). The symphony’s second half begins with scherzo-like music before the organ enters with rich chordal blasts followed by the symphony’s well-known theme, which becomes a majestic march to a grande finale. The Bacchanale [from Samson and Delila, Op. 47] is a festival tribute to the god Bacchus, patron of the sensual. It opens with an exotic oboe solo, moves quickly to revelry, a serene interlude, passionate melodies and a frenzied climax. The flamboyant March Militaire expresses S’s patriotic pride and France’s domination of Algeria. The Carnival of the Animals is one of S’s most popular works, creatively, humorously and irresistibly portraying the animal (and pianist) world. The Danse Macabre is known to all who have ever celebrated Halloween.
