These three concertos for strings (and oboe, celesta or tubular bells) seek to capture the spirit of Christmas, successfully. The Concerto grosso in g minor by Corelli (1653-1713) is the most well known concerto dedicated to Christmas, and inspired Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. It mixes lively quick with slow mvmts, each of captivating beauty. The Manfredini (1680-1748) Concerto is more pastoral in spirit, starting with a beautifully flowing Largo. The 2nd mvmt is rapturous, yet contemplative. The 3rd steps into a lively dance. Lindh’s Concerto composed in 1979-81 remains true to the Baroque spirit. It begins with a sad, elegiac melody. The 2nd mvmt channels Bach in a lively mode. The 3rd evokes a joyful yet quiet wintry scene, with a lovely oboe part. Mvmt 4 finds rotund peasants dancing around the roaring fireplace in celebration.
