Out of Hand
Peter Hand Big Band
Savant Records, 2014 Reviewed by Trish Morgan 01-22-2015
Peter Hand is a jazz guitarist and arranger in NYC. This is his second big band album and this features the amazing saxaphonist Houston Person. It’s a strong album - tight, focused arrangements. At times the feel is more intimate that you usually experience with a big band. No FCCs. Best tracks are 1, 3, 6, 8
1 Sunny 7:10 - A classic. Upbeat, great sax. Starts abruptly, but gets right into the swing.
2 Blues in the Night 8:33 - Bluesy, quiet, a little raunchy
3 Listen to Your Heart 7:09 - Quiet, restrained waltz with a repeating refrain. Very nice.
4 Out of Print Blues 8:30 - Mid-tempo. Shifts back and forth from solos to ensemble.
5 Barbara Rose 7:35 - Slow and quiet. Muted.
6 The Elevator 4:39 - Fast and engaging. Saxes are wailing.
7 Night Echo 6:11 - Mid-tempo with Latin rhythm, but delicate.
8 Day Dream 7:19 - Ellington/Strayhorn composition and it feels like late night in the 1940s. Slow and thoughtful. Solos throughout.
9 Summertime 8:06 - Gershwin standard. Measured, but grooving.
