Genre: shoegaze, noise, ambient, fassbinder
From the press: "Using a friend’s reel to reel tape player, Cantu employed electric guitar, modular synthesizer, drum machine and concrète sounds from his surroundings at the Headlands, recorded while walking to the studio, cooking in the kitchen, talking with friends, the ocean, films he was watching, driving in a car. Everything was record stereo to tape. There is only one track with overdubs – otherwise each take is a true document of an entirely live take.”
Basically, it’s an amazing album from a consistent artist full of shoegazey/ambient goodness. Play play play.
Others: Fennesz, Infinite Body, Belong, Yellow Swans
Favorites: 1, 8, 15, 3, 2, 6, 7, 14, 10, 11. FCCs: None
1.(8:40) **** Bright shoegaze + super drowned out drum machine. Impossibly beautiful track.
2.(4:52) ** Pensive minimal intro. Distorted textures. More languid gorgeous noise.
3.(2:02) ** Pitter patter beat plus reverb heavy guitar.
4.(0:49) Bleating little interlude…good lead-in to next track
5.(1:35) * Bassy drone. I feel like this is what lava in musical form would sound like. Nice whacked out bird samples
6.(2:06) ** Prominent drum machine...glowing uplifting ambient.
7.(2:36) ** Blissed out. Do I hear a little vocal sample hidden in there? Cool stuff. Strange second half, but still great.
8.(2:14) *** Sounds like a Captured Tracks band slathered in distortion.
9.(1:18) Shimmering. Thudding beat.
10.(1:43) Pulsating. Spacious. Darker vibe.
11.(2:36) Quiet, softer.
12.(2:06) Noisy bursts…more drifting ambience.
13.(1:30) More of an industrial feel…then squelching textures and more samples
14.(1:42) ** Grassy fields and afternoons in the summer.
15.(2:50) *** Gaping ambient…just massive. Wonderful track.
16.(1:06) Stormy, noisy. Mangled little experiment…strange yet oddly appropriate conclusion to this quietly ambitious album.
