The flute was quite popular among amateur musicians in Mozart’s time (1756-1791), and he wrote beautiful works for it, including solos within piano concertos, symphonies and serenades. The Concerto for Flute and Harp, K. 299, written for a father-daughter duo, is an unusual pairing of instruments complemented by rich orchestral colors and effects. The 1st and 3rd mvmts have abundant melodies, dazzling lightness and clichéd musical figures that Mozart transforms into stirring motifs. In the Andantino, the flute and harp sing wistful arias within a choral-like orchestral texture. The Sinfonia Concertante is a recreation of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in D Major for Two Pianos by British composer S. Dodgson and Mr. Stallman, a virtuoso flutist. In the outer mvmts, the two flutes vie in virtuosity, while the Andante is an operatic love duet. The Andante and Rondo in G Major, arranged by Mr. Stallman, comprises 2 of 9 mvmts Mozart wrote as a wedding Serenade for a family friend’s sister. The piece has non-stop bustle, a wealth of melodic invention, a lyrical Andante and an Allegro that showcases fast, virtuoso passagework.
