Mozart’s violin concertos are full of drama, playfulness, and constantly changing characters – happy, agitated, sad, flirtatious. Mozart began violin lessons at 6, made his debut at age 8, and played both violin and keyboard as a touring child prodigy. Billboard chart-topping violinist Pine, who performed a Mozart concerto at age 10, adds her own cadenzas since Mozart left none. Pine’s compositions are published alongside those of violin greats Fritz Kreisler and Jascha Heifetz. K218 is extroverted and virtuosic. K207 and K211 feature strong contrasts between forte (loud) and piano (soft), and dialogue between soloist and orchestra. Their 2nd mvmts are lyrical. The last mvmt of K207 is brilliant and witty, while K211’s is a French minuet. K216 begins with a tranquil theme. The 2nd mvmt is an aria, while the cheerful 3rd contains a rustic folk song from Strasbourg and was featured in the 2003 film Master and Commander. K219 is the longest. Its 1st mvmt opens joyfully. The violin enters tenderly before exclaiming with passion. The graceful 2nd mvmt is calm, with lovely melodies. The last mvmt, a gracious minuet, is interrupted halfway thru by exotic, menacing music in “alla Turca” style (imitating a Turkish military band). The Sinfonia concertante in E flat major K364 may express Mozart’s grief over his mother’s death on their trip to Paris in the year before its composition. The 1st mvmt is noble. In the 2nd, the mourning violin is offered hope by the viola, though both succumb to grief as the mvmt ends. The 3rd mvmt is vivacious, filled with high spirits and good humor.
