Ms. Pine, with pianist Matthew Hagle, performs 25 classical cradle songs, which are as compositionally sophisticated as longer works by the same composers. These beautiful works will please classical connoisseurs and music novices of all ages alike. Many pieces are world favorites, e.g., those by Brahms, Gershwin, Fauré, and Schubert. The lullabies were inspired by traditional songs that mothers sang to lull their infants to sleep, and are meant to evoke the warmth of familial love and fond childhood memories. Pine plays her 1742 “ex-Soldat” Guarneri Del Gesu violin, which Brahms chose for his protégé, Marie Soldat, the first woman to perform his Violin Concerto. In half the CD tracks, Pine uses different mutes to produce aural personalities she describes as “warm,” “delicate,” and “mysterious.” Generous program notes describe each piece in detail.
