MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO
Hugo Fernandez plays hollow-body electric guitar, writes all the tunes, and leads a quartet out of Spain that includes sax, bass, and drums. The music is pretty straightforward, pleasant enough, but sadly with a bit too much “sameness.” It’s worth a listen though. Most tracks are good; I marked a few I liked best.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 * Starts mid-slow. A gentle melody on sax, with guitar playing rhythm. Second half gathers more energy; becomes mid-fast with good lead guitar. (8:28)
2 Mid-fast. Alternating sections are led by guitar & sax. Uninspiring. (6:27)
3 * Mid-tempo. A relaxed, easy stroll. Mainly on guitar to start; a long bass solo in the middle; drums & sax take it out. (5:42)
4 Mid-tempo. Light & easy soprano sax. Maybe a bit of Middle Eastern nuance. (6:45)
5 Slow. Dreamy and featureless. (4:45)
6 ** Mid-fast. Energetic, upbeat & catchy. Led mostly by sax. Good guitar passage in the middle. Fun track. (5:04)
7 Fast. Drums & bass crank it up, but leaders are less inspired. Never gets anywhere. (4:35)
8 * Mid-slow. Gentle & pastoral mostly but with bursts of increased energy. (7:23)
