MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO
Bay Area (and KZSU) favorites Joe Lovano (tenor sax) and Dave Douglas (trumpet) team up at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2013. The set includes two tunes by each leader, plus two by tenor great Wayne Shorter. Rhythm section is piano, bass & drums.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 Mid-tempo. A brief introduction of the band. Lovano & Douglas play overlapping fanfares. Other players each get a solo. Tinkling of the keys leads into #2 (4:38)
2 * Piano opens slow; trumpet & sax soon join in together. They share or trade leads most of the way. Now it’s fast, catchy & melodic. Piano takes a nice turn toward end. (13:58)
3 Slow meandering intro, then finds its groove. Different sections feature trumpet & sax in unison, solos by each, a piano bridge, a loud ensemble finish. (8:32)
4 ** Starts slow & easy, like a ballad; builds up more & more & more. Leaders take turns. Climax has all five players going strong. (10:25)
5 Mid-tempo. Duet by trumpet & sax. Wanders. Not much to it. An intro to #6. (1:33)
6 ** Picks up #5 in mid-melody, then gets interesting. Lots of good solos and strong rhythms. Super drumming. Good, likable, mainstream jazz. (12:46)
