MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO
This outstanding album is a tribute by one great trumpet player to another: Lee Morgan. The group is a quintet with saxophone, piano, bass and drums. All the tracks are good.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 ** Mid-fast. Great intro to the set. Stirring, energetic piece. Superb solos by each player: trumpet, then sax, then piano, then bass, then drums. (8:07)
2 ** Soulful melodies. Very expressive; high spirits; exuberant mood. (7:24)
3 * Mid-tempo. Bluesy, toe tapping fun. Piano is featured well. (8:53)
4 * Slow love song. Elegant muted trumpet, gently accompanied by piano & bass. (8:59)
5 Mid-fast. 60s soulful. Trumpet leads most of it. (7:29)
6 * Slow. Trumpet fanfare starts. Settles into bluesy stroll. Strong ensemble playing. (12:26)
7 ** Very fast. Sax and trumpet start out in unison, then trade solos. (6:44)
8 Slow, gentle love song. Pure, lovely tone. Comp’d by soft piano, bass, brushes. (6:15)
9 * Fast. Fun ensemble encore to finish the set. Tenor sax is especially good. (9:40)
