JAZZ: ELECTRIC GUITAR & PIANO
PR materials for jazz guitarist Razavi and pianist Roth-Newell say they’ve been rhythm-section mates in large ensembles. Here they form a duo for their first album together. Tracks 5 & 7 composed by Razavi; numbers 2, 3, 6 are by Roth-Newell.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 ** Mid-fast. A bouncy tune by Clifford Brown, known as a guitarist’s piece since Joe Pass did it. Much the best track on this album, it’s snappy, energetic & fun. (3:50)
2 * Mid-tempo. Easy going toe-tapper. Piano & guitar trade a pleasant melody. (4:22)
3 Slow. Sentimental ballad. Too sleepy for my taste. (5:28)
4 ** Mid-fast. Joe Zawinal’s tune was a monster soul-jazz hit for Cannonball Adderley. More syncopated here, it features a forceful piano & funky rhythm guitar. (4:38)
5 Mid-tempo. Loose and improvisational with fast runs on both instruments. (3:59)
6 Mid-fast. Improv lead by piano with rhythm guitar accompanying, then the reverse. (4:54)
7 Very slow. Dreamy and peaceful. Too much so. (3:59)
8 Mid-tempo. Elevator-music cover of the Beatles. Yuck. (5:06)
