This is the second solo record from Irish singer songwriter Glen Hansard. I first heard about him from his work in the movie Once, and his awesome project that followed called Swell Season. Really great mainly acoustic stuff, some amazing songs on here. Listen and enjoy!!
FCC CLEAN!
Favorites: 2, 5, 6, 9, **10**
1. (3:32) Grace Beneath the Pines - Somber, dark, vocals and strings only.
2. (4:47) Wedding Ring - Sloppy drum brushing, great guitar picking, and a lovely Glen Hansard vocal. Super folky, great track.
3. (3:22) Winning Streak - Mid-tempo folk anthem. Great harmonies, piano, drums, guitar picking…maybe harpsichord too?
4. (4:46) Her Mercy - Mid-tempo, happy song, horns build in at the end.
5. (4:39) McCormack’s Wall - Sounds like an Irish love song. His voice is so effortlessly beautiful. Finishes off with a super beautiful string part that sounds like a piece to dance a jig to, kind of love it.
6. (3:02) Lowly Deserter - Fiddles, horns and a harder drum beat, as hard rocking as Glen Hansard ever gets. This is another favorite of mine.
7. (3:34) Paying My Way - This one feels pretty Springstein-y to me. Downtempo rock, a little boring.
8. (4:26) My Little Ruin - Darker feeling, urgent, beautiful instrumentation.
9. (3:13) Just to Be the One - I really like this one, beautiful horn and flute part, more awesome and interesting guitar sounds, whispered vocals, great track.
10. (4:01) Stay the Road - Far and away my favorite, this one sounds like the original Glen Hansard stuff, simple, sweet, guitar and vocals. Tells a story, and the phrasing is so unique. Really great.
