“This Is Your Life” Augustines
Trio out of Brooklyn, New York, which specializes in stadium-sized alternative/indie rock anthems. Augustines is incredible live, and many of the songs seemed designed for their intense, high-energy shows. Lead singer-songwriter, Billy McCarthy, sings with a distinctive throatiness that works well with the band’s driving compositions and heart-wrenching arrangements. Although the band is now based in Brooklyn, McCarthy is originally from Auburn, near Sacramento. This is the Augustines’ third album.

Recommended: 2, 1, 9, 6, 4. FCC on Track 1. Play Disc with Edited Version.
1. (3:43) Are We Alive? – Urgent alt-rock anthem. Pounding drums. Growling guitar with synths dancing above. “Are we alive/Or are we just kidding ourselves?” *** FCC “F-cking” (twice) – Play edited disc.
2. (4:32) When Things Fall Apart – Easygoing melody with skipping rhythm, intriguingly intricate keyboards and McCarthy’s big vocals. ****
3. (3:58) The Forgotten Way – Restless drum beat. Piano. Synth strings.
4. (3:59) Running in Place – Dynamics shifting from fast to slow. Running pace dominates. Cool backing vocals from Senegalese duo, Pape & Cheikh. **
5. (4:54) May You Keep Well – Mid-tempo track built on 80s-sounding world rhythm track. Pape & Cheikh on backing vocals again.
6. (5:01) Landmine – Ballad with strumming guitar and piano. Church-size backing vocals and big drums join for last 90 seconds or so. ***
7. (3:47) Hold Me Loneliness – Jittery beat and brass. Quavering vocals.
8. (4:44) No Need to Explain – Roaring guitars and soaring vocals.
9. (5:30) This Is Your Life – Starts with strumming guitar. Builds into another great alt-rock anthem with reassuring vocals and pounding drums. ***
10. (3:35) Days Roll By – Glistening keys intermixed with fuzzy guitars and pounding drums.
