Refreshingly SOULFUL compilation of old gospel numbers, revitalized for the modern ear by several powerful contemporary artists. VARIETY OF GENRES and instrumentation. Meant for active listening and good for a long drive. NO FCC ISSUES.
*** (3:29) Upbeat. Clapping, steel guitar. Great if you like Tom Waits.
*** (3:56) Medium crawl. Bit of a jam. Repetitive and catchy.
**** (3:12) Medium. Killer steel guitar. Darker tone.
***** (4:17) Mixes original recording with new production. Less repetitive.
*** (4:42) Slow walk gospel. Male vocal lead.
***** (3:19) Wow. Very contemporary touch on an age-old hymn. Groovy, killer vocals.
*** (3:54) Medium tempo. Bit of a march.
**** (4:24) Blues rock. Head banger.
* (2:51) Creepy. Dark. Slow.
* (3:59) Mediocre. Female vocal is central, but is weakest on this album.
*** (3:53) Simple--just a few guitar plucks + voice. Very slow, somber, a ton of feeling. More instrumentation trickles in at the end.
