SOUL JAZZ
The three Clayton brothers (on piano, saxophone & flute, and bass) become a quartet with Obed Calvaire on drums, and are here joined by guest trumpeter, the great Terell Stafford.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 ** Mid-fast. Very swingin’ number. Trumpet & sax solos. Steady rhythm. (5:18)
2 Mixed tempo. Multiple different phases. Loses its way. (11:29)
3 * Mid-slow. Gritty & bluesy. Melody on trumpet. For B.B.King? (9:17)
4 Very slow. Dreamy tone poem on flute & piano with the slightest drums. (5:58)
5 * Mid-slow. Easy going but quite emotional. Soulful melody mostly on sax. (8:03)
6 Very slow. Melody on arco bass. Exceedingly sad & dreary. (6:03)
7 * Slow. Best of the slow ones. Pretty melody on flute; graceful accompaniment. (5:51)
