Istanbul-born Mehmet Ali Sanlikol takes his deep knowledge of Turkish musical forms and pairs it with his expert knowledge of western music gained at Berklee and New England Conservatory, creating something fresh, lively and complex; excellent side-people including Anat Cohen on clarinet; Dave Liebman on sax, trumpeter Tiger Okoshi,and drummer Antonio Sanchez; all tracks are worth playing

*1-The Turkish 2nd Line (New Orleans Çiftetellisi) ((6:04) – very nice Turkish-sounding through-motif beginning with clarinet and percussion and gathering steam into straight-ahead jazz; best kind of fusion; lovely clarinet
*2- A Dream in Nihavend (6:04) begins slower with mournful vocalization; opens into piano arpeggios, adding horns; dreamy indeed
3-Whirl Around (6:42) – distinctly Eastern motif intro, English and Turkish lyrics backed by horns, etc., fascinating melange of East and West
*4-Medium Funk, Rebellion (5:06) – leads off with clarinet and noirish sound; synth adds to mystery as tension builds and opens out into bigger band sound; fantastic clarinet
5-Ballad, Reminiscence (4:22) – more laid-back start, slower, contemplative with beautiful trumpet work; nice piano too; picks up tempo about a third of the way through and adds whole orchestra, then dials it back again to individual instruments
6- Uptempo Swing, “Resolution” The Niyaz Suite (6:16) – starts with insistent piano note; adds more and comes back to that note; horn comes in over note; opens out into uptempo swing and goes back to single note; pretty horn solo; ensemble ending
7- A Jazzed Up Devr-i Revan (6:11) –light percussion starts; long drum comes in, dies; lots of rests; echoing footfall sounds; drums plus horns plus piano; feels like a march with drums and breath sounds as it gathers steam toward ending
*8-An Afro Semai (6:11) – heavy drumming and horns with nice piano flourishes; good texture; turns mizmar-ish a third of the way through; pulsing beat; dials it back to trumpet, piano and sticks; mizmar comes back
9-Love Theme from Ergenekon (4:29) – starts with piano notes; light noodling and then adds voice; horn; quiet, contemplative
