Lisa Mann’s Hard Times, Bad Decisions
Reviewed by KKray
This album is fun and has great vocals. All of the songs tell a story. It has a feminist, don’t-mess-with-this-gal spice going on. A lot of songs about love--past, present, painful, and uplifting. Interesting mix of country, and old school pop. FCC (song 5, Doghouse)
(4:31) *Emotive vocals, a ballad of regret and repentance with an old school flare. Drags on a little long, but the lyrics are well done and so are the instrumentals.
(4:12) **Duet, both singers with very strong and emotive voices. Slow and melancholy. Classic couple duo looking back at their relationship together. Some good lyrics in there.
(3:50) ***This one flows a little more quickly and is much more upbeat. Some neat keyboard intermittently. Soulful feel, with Mann’s voice and some backup singers.
(4:17) **Sounds old school, almost with a Walking on Sunshine feel. Upbeat, a lot of boom and ooh-ahing.
(3:16) ***FCC (took his ASS to the doghouse). Funky and poppy, fast-paced, old school woman-angry-at-man-who-behaves-badly kind of feel. Some good electric guitar in there. Some barking and howling at the end!
(3:31) **Slow, but some neat brass wind instruments intermittently and she show’s off her strong, almost show-tuney voice again. Another love ballad.
(2:58) ***Fun and fast-paced. Defiant, girl power-esc song. Lyrics like “I get to choose which hand to hold.” Catchy.
(3:19) **Funny and some good scratchy-voiced solos. She describes her father’s house, and all the rules you have to follow there.
(3:12) **Some great piano scales. Another love ballad about how you need a better woman than the one you had before who treated you badly.
(3:19) **Gambling song about spending a night at the bar/casino. Fun lyrics, fast paced.
(3:21) ***Upbeat, high pitched and catchy love song. The title pretty much explains it. Another Walking on Sunshine or Not the Only One-esc ballad.
(5:35) ***Plucky intro, more of a country Western style. Good lyrics that tell a story. Slow paced but not in a sleepy way.
