In My Sleep EP
(1432 R – Record Label)
Reviewed by BravoMarco
Ethiopian producer E.R. (Ethiopian Records – Endeguena Mulu) with a selection of local sounds combined with a UK inspired dubby electronica pulse. Heavy on the effected samples, with traditional beats put through the dryer (or mixer). Bordering dance & experimental with the added elegance of that traditional flavour. Ping heaven. This was originally released in 2015 together with the equally sublime Letu Sinega EP – Now available on vinyl. (Both EP’s are highly recommended & are comparable in style, hence the very similar intro)
Similar to: Depth Charge, A Guy Called Gerald & certain Ethiopian traditional rhythms.
All superb – Loving 1
No detectable FCC’s (Sampled voices)
1) Terraraw (6.06) A repetitive beauty. Simple, sampled voices over a slow trance beat – then the pace picks up & it’s a funky ska explosion. Concludes with a tribal house kick back.
2) In My Sleep (11.41) Slower measured start, percussion kicks in with the samples wailing vocals & it then gets movin’ on. Head spinning whirling dervish of a ride. Reboots half way, could really cut at 5.44 – More of a chilled out flavour mixed in with a mild doosh experience. Long fade -Tip top.
3) Woyene (9.17) More of the E.R. wobbly bass, faster energy, if slightly disjointed at times. Lovely mellow conclusion.
4) Hetebet (4.11) Local sounds given the treatment. Mesmerizing, mid paced sampled heaven. Glitchy, with a funky fresh feel.
