Clarinetist Paul Green takes klezmer and other Jewish and non-Jewish melodies and puts his own spin on them with jazz, classical, blues and elements from Jewish music with four other musicians; songs are half Jewish and half straight up jazz
NO FCC's (instrumental); favorite tracks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9
1- Tarras Doina and Blues (6:43) –rhapsodic klezmer form segues to minor key blues-- great clarinet & piano; swings
*2-Si La Mar Era Leche (3:41) –Sephardic folk melody – haunting and beautiful
3- Yiddish Footprints (6:09) – 12 bar Jewish blues based on Wayne Shorter's melody-- begins quietly with low-key bass and opens out with more instruments; very much in the jazz mode
*4 – Shein Vi Di L'vone (3:04) – tuneful selection from American Yiddish theater with crying clarinet and other instruments chiming in to make it swing
*5- Der Gasn Nigun (6:31) – slow Jewish waltz; a bit dirge-y but then picks up in the middle
*6- So, Nu? (6:49) – “So What” from Miles Davis, changed to a Jewish scale from Miles' Dorian mode
7- My Funny Jewish Valentine (4:39) –Richard Rodger's famous tune re-worked with Jewish scales; nice clarinet arrangement
***8- Los Bilbilicos (4:01) – jazzy version of this classic Sephardic song with solo clarinet intro; guitar comes in – nice duet;
*9-Papirosn (5:28) – heart-breaking song about orphan in the ghetto forced to sell cigarettes on the street; picks up tempo a lot and becomes almost happy (no lyrics here)
10- Utt Da Zay (6:21) – Cab Calloway recorded this originally Yiddish melody, Jewish/jazz fusion
