A collection of diverse and (mostly) unknown musicians, derived from World Music Network’s “Battle of the Bands” competition.
Something for pretty much every world music lover, from hot African guitars to Yiddish music with a modern twist. Every track is worth a play, pick one at random, you can’t go wrong.
1. A Sicilian rock band, upbeat with an Arabic flair.
2. An Italian/Ethiopian blend w/gorgeous fem. Vox. Mostly mid
3. Polish, mid/upbeat jazz-funk. Great band, cool vox.
4. Updated mid. Jazzy klezmer w/Yiddish/English vocals. Fun.
5. Rokia Traore’s little sister. Relaxed, great voc harmonies.
6. Souped-up Malian guitar, soaring vox. Down/midtempo
7. Downtempo, kora & Lithuanian dulcimer w/male/fem. Vox
8. Fast, LA-based band. Blend of Brazil & indie rock. So good.
9. Fast Italian/Irish/Baltic blend. Tempo change, strings,perc,vox
10. So cool! Upbeat Bulgarian folk meets dub.
11. Tight female harmonies, fast w/plucked strings. In Polish.
12. Upbeat Moroccan drums, trance-like, some cool vocal touches.
13. Meditative and calm guitar & tabla, picks up later.
