STRAIGHT-FORWARD JAZZ COMBO
Ken Peplowski leads his quartet through a set of all covers, including pop songs, older jazz numbers, and a movie soundtrack. Peplowski’s clarinet is featured on tracks 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10; his tenor sax on numbers 2, 4, 7, and 9. Accompaniment is piano, bass & drums.
All instrumental. No FCC issues
1 ** Very fast. Exuberant Duke Ellington piece. Fun clarinet; piano & drum solos. (6:36)
2 Slow love song. Warm, breathy tenor sax. Late night mellow. (5:17)
3 Very slow. John & Yoko tune. Bass starts; clarinet enters. Modal mood. Bass solo. (2:26)
4 Very slow. Solo tenor intro, then band enters. Sad, gentle ballad. (5:16)
5 VERY slow. Noel Coward love song on clarinet. Old fashioned. Restrained ‘comp. (3:59)
6 * Mid-tempo. Bright clarinet lead with runs & trills. Piano & drum solos. (4:44)
7 ** Fast. What a departure! High energy, modern, aggressive. Forceful tenor sax lead with responses from piano. The title refers to its 12-tone melody line. (5:40)
8 Very slow, gentle. Music from Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” on clarinet. A bit mysterious. (6:52)
9 * Slow. Warm beautiful tone on tenor sax. Lovely melody. (4:41)
10 * Mid-tempo. Old-time blues. Swinging Fats Waller tune on clarinet. Bowed bass. (7:37)
