STRAIGHT AHEAD JAZZ COMBO
Trombonist & composer Steve Davis leads a band including reeds, piano, bass, and drums on his 17th album. The set is mostly originals by Davis, but tracks 1, 6, 7, and 9 are covers of Tony Williams, Jimmy Van Heusen, the Gershwin brothers, and Bobby Hutcherson.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 * Fast. Good intro to album with intro & passages by full band, plus good solos. (4:48)
2 Mid-tempo. Sax states a theme; trombone repeats, then goes on improv solo. (6:15)
3 * Mid-tempo. Lots of spirit & drive. Big alto sax solo; trombone & tenor solos too. (8:31)
4 * Mid-fast. Piano lead & flute are reminiscent of Corea’s “500 Miles High” (6:31)
5 Very fast. Repeated theme by band. Saxes & trombone trade showy solos. (5:32)
6 Very slow. Melancholy ballad led by trombone; gentle accompaniment. (9:06)
7 Mid-tempo, swingin. Trombone & tenor sax duet on Gershwin tune. (5:52)
8 ** Fast. Full band intro; expressive & interesting trombone solo; then alto, tenor, and drum solos. (7:11)
9 Slow. Showcases the flute. It’s ok, but a little bit sleepy. (6:23)
10 Mid-tempo. Dreamy & low energy. Solos by alto sax, soprano sax, trombone. (7:26)
11 ** Mid-fast. Full band sections are spirited. Very long, passionate solos by trombone, tenor, and piano. Fades out slowly. (8:45)
