Droning, psychedelic lo-fi folk odysseys performed on the mandolin. Tree branch Twig is Lindsay Keast of Des Moines, and this is her first release on longtime KZSU friend Andrew Weathers’ Full Spectrum Records. (She’s guested on Andrew Weathers Ensemble records.) These pieces are gentle and melancholy, hazy, airy, and sometimes unsettling, guided by Keast’s sparing but clear and powerful singing. Mysterious and beautiful. RIYL Grouper, Karima Walker, Sister Grotto, Talk West, Tara Jane O’Neil. Favorites: 1, 2. No FCCs detected.
1. *(9:51)—Insistent, tense mandolin plucking. Lonely, wispy desert drone. Slow trance-like singing. Trippy and intense. One of my favorite songs I’ve heard all year.
2. *(6:08)—Slow, pretty strumming. Plaintive singing in German. Picks up for an extended wordless middle before coming around full circle.
3. (4:08)—Sample of James Joyce reading from Ulysses. Simple mandolin line, staccato singing.
4. (20:20)—Multitracked fingerpicking sliding in and out of sync. Soft drone. Backmasked or pitch-shifted mandolin tracks cut in and out. Gets deep and intense in the final five minutes. No singing.
