Review: New York composer/saxophonist latest release is a live set, with thundering timpani climaxes, avant-rock guitar howls and squelching electronics, along with the Berne trademark of implacably interweaving horn lines tugged by sly rhythm-bends constantly resurfacing. All instruments, and especially the clarinet, explore uncharted territories, creating new vistas to gaze out from. Not for the faint of heart.
If You Like: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Fred Frith, Van der Graf Generator, David S. Ware
track Review (favorites denoted by *): 1/ Hora Feliz (10:26) - starts quiet & slow, electronic & spacey> space jam swings into midtempo loud cacophonous jam> sax solo goes wild> clarinet solo> crescendo & fade 2/ Stingray Shuffle (7:36) - horns start> slow tempo builds to midtempo sonic jam & slows> abstract free jazz> melody shifts into cacophonous jam & stop *3/ Sideshow (26:01) - piano solo starts> morphs into uptempo jam> swings to fast tempo & slows> woodwind interplay over electronics> slow build in intensity segues into mellow space jam> electronic guitar solo morphs into uptempo jam, them mellows into percussion solo> morphs onto slow space jam with heavy drumming> heavy horns> quick fade *4/ Incidentals Contact (10:48) - off kilter uptempo jam slows to cacophonous jam like an argument between horns> swings into uptempo jam almost like prog rock> mellows to midtempo then builds to a frenzy & stops * 5/ Prelude One. Sequel Too (9:18) - multilayered horns start> slow tempo jam slows some more> sax solo edgy & slow builds to midtempo jam & fades
