INDIE FOLK-POP
Busman’s Holiday is Addison and Lewis Rogers, songwriting brothers from Bloomington, Indiana. Addison plays guitar, Lewis drums. Popular Cycles is their second full-length release. The set displays some nice melodies, good singing, interesting story-telling, varied styles, and compelling, varied instrumentation.
RIYL Fleet Foxes, Avett Brothers.
No FCC issues (but #6 has “faggot”).
1 * Mid-tempo. First part: swaying melody, orchestra. Second part: calypso beat. (4:16)
2 * Mid-slow. String intro. Melancholy ballad. Simple rhythm guitar; cello, horns. (4:24)
3 Mid-fast. Upbeat, happy. Bouncy rhythm. Descant flute. Full orchestra. (3:28)
4 Slow. Falsetto. Orchestral backing. Dreary. Second half is full orchestra, no voice. (3:49)
5 ** Mid-tempo. Good lead singing. Driving accompaniment incl strong trombones. (4:42)
6 Slow. First part: armed robbery lyric, acoustic guitar, flute, whistling. Second part: ironic prayer lyrics with strings. Odd. (3:49)
7 Mid-tempo. Children’s song-like melody. Acoustic guitar, low strings, percussion. (3:45)
8 ** Very slow. Down & out, he somehow found his way into a Catholic church. Almost solo a cappella (just a single tone accompanies). Soft guitar coda. Powerful stuff. (3:36)
9 Mid-tempo. Post tornado catastrophe, set to a bouncy Latin rhythm. (5:22)
10 * Mid-slow. Sing-along melody. Happy feel. Well sung. Bach-like cello coda. (3:04)
