Reissue of a 2006 doom metal classic from the UK. Emo and slowcore fans will find a lot to love here too, as the music foregoes fantastical theatrics (no non-psychological monsters, no eye-rolling weed puns) in favor of slow-burning, earnest, heavy beauty. These are deep, hypnotic, spacious dirges full of clear-eyed, plaintive, introspective singing about love, friendship, loneliness, and vulnerability. 1. *(12:06)—Majestic. Dark, moody intro. Gets more melodic after a couple minutes, when the singing enters. Lovely long meandering finish.
2. (7:31)—Marginally faster, but still slow. The single? Thunderous chorus, bordering on melodramatic.
3. *(11:30)—Really slow, meltingly gorgeous. Nice harmony lead guitars. Singing to an absent friend—my favorite lyrics on the whole album. “When I am not alone I sever silent moments, building bridges with meaningless words, but only feel the distance further. Remember being happy in our silence?”
4. (8:32)—Relatively fast but still, um, slow. More grand and dramatic singing. “Don’t ask me where I am. I am trying to come home, but I can’t keep myself from drifting.”
5. (10:16)—Still slow. Kinda mellow, at least until the last few minutes, when it gets grand and yearning.
